As a Church family, we are committed to the biblical value of diversity. The world is diverse and heaven will be diverse. The Church depicted in the book of Acts reflected the diversity of its community. Given this, we want Hope to be a Church where we extend grace, work to create a come-as-you-are culture and foster a sense of belonging for all people, regardless of past experiences or present realities.
In Matthew 12:43-45, Jesus describes a principle of being filled. Jesus compares a person who was filled with an evil spirit, to a house that is swept clean, put in order and left unoccupied. The evil spirit comes out of the person and then returns to find the house clean, but empty. The spirit then returns with spirits more wicked than itself and Jesus says that the condition of that person is worse than before. Ephesians 5:18 says, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” Together, these verses show that any spirit a person fills himself with other than the Holy Spirit, is a wicked evil spirit. It is wicked and evil because it keeps the person far from God. Busyness is one of many evil spirits that keeps a lot people in New Orleans far from God.

Religion vs. Relationship

Religion vs. Relationship. New Orleans is a very religious city. There are church buildings everywhere. In some neighborhoods, there is a church building on every corner. Religion is widely tolerated, even celebrated, in the culture of New Orleans. Mardi Gras is a prime example of this, as the entire city shuts down for two days to celebrate Mardi Gras. It is common place and accepted that public school events would be opened or closed with prayer in the name of Jesus. It’s religion, religion everywhere and not an authentic relationship to be found. Despite the wide acceptance of religion, there seem to be very few people in New Orleans who have a relationship with God through Jesus. Very few people are asking, ‘How do I live a life that pleases God and brings glory to Him?’ There is a huge disconnect between religion and relationship for most people in New Orleans. God has little or no bearing on how people treat each other or spend their money. Most people in New Orleans have religion, they believe in God and they get their “ticket” punched by attending a church service or doing a good deed. Many people have just enough religion to inoculate them against a real, authentic, biblically-defined relationship with God. A relationship made possible by the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus, that transforms the person into a new creation. A relationship that changes the way a person views himself and others. A relationship with Jesus changes everything, religion changes nothing.

Diversity vs. Segregation

Diversity vs. Segregation. New Orleans is an incredibly diverse city. The diversity is wonderful and in some arenas, like music, the diversity is celebrated by all. Despite the diversity, New Orleans is a very divided, segregated city. Orleans parish is roughly 50% African-American and 50% Caucasian. To see the divided nature of the city, one only need look at the public schools. Taken as a whole, Orleans Parish Public Schools are over 90% African-American. This seems to be pretty far off the general population. So, how can this be? Where are all the white kids? The short answer is that most of the white kids are in private schools.

In an effort to stand against the division and segregation in New Orleans, Hope Christian Church is pursuing diversity. The goal of Hope is to see the diversity of the community reflected in the Church. Martin Luther King observed more than 40 years ago that the Church was the most segregated place in America. Sadly, this has not changed much. Heaven will be diverse, populated by people from every tongue, tribe and nation. The early Church described in the book of Acts was incredibly diverse. The early Church was comprised of Jews and Greeks, men and women, slaves and free people, barbarians and pagans. It’s this time now, between the early Church and the final Church, that is so segregated and off the mark of what God intends the Church to be. So, Hope is pursuing diversity with intentionality to demonstrate God’s power of reconciliation and restoration.

Saints Watch Party

We'll be showing the Saints on our big screen this Thursday and sharing a meal together. Hope is providing the burgers, hot dogs and drinks. Food begins at 6:30 pm and the game kicks at 7:20 pm. This event is open to everyone.

Romans study

Our study of the letter called Romans continues this Saturday as we look at Romans chapter five. From chapter four, we learned that God has the power to change reality. He calls things that are not as though they were and He calls into existence things that do not exist. God turns darkness to light, barren to fruitful, death to life, slave to free, sinful to righteous and guilty to justified. What a great and awesome God is the Lord!

Hope's Birthday

Hope Christian Church began in August of 2008, so this is our birthday month. We'll be marking the occasion this Saturday during our worship service with some birthday cake. Join us at 5:30 pm for a great celebration of the Lord and what He is doing in New Orleans.

Rock Band: Battle of the Bands

Sunday, July 10 is our Rock Band: Battle of the Bands competition. It starts at 6:00 pm at the church building. Bring some junk food and come ready to entertain with your band. We'll have Rock Band on the big screen and through the sound system, so it should be pretty sweet!

Pot-luck Dinner

We will have a pot-luck dinner this Saturday, June 25 following our worship service. This will be an opportunity to encourage and pray for Chris and Beth before they leave for Buffalo.
